- The purchase price of the sewing thread used in the manufacture of garment is a very tiny. It probably represents less than one
percent of the whole.
But if things go wrong, and the thread will not sew, or the needles break, or the garments come apart at the seams, or become twisted,
puckered or otherwise unsightly, or will not wear, or cannot be satisfactorily washed, two outcomes are almost certain.
The manufacturer's production of distribution costs are likely to be severely increased, while his/her reputation is going to be reduced.
- Hanging By A Thread aims to give the TCF industry a working knowledge of sewing thread, an appreciation of its strengths and an
understanding of its weaknesses. All is explained in simple straightforward language and is as non-technical as it is possible to be.
- The authors are well placed to undertake such a work. One has spent twenty years in the TCF industry. The other has spent twenty years
as a business journalist and writer.
Both received great encouragement, support and assistance from the Manufacturing Training Division of TAFE NSW, from the Australian
TCF Industry Training Board (NSW), from the NSW Chamber of Manufactures and from the NSW Education and Training Foundation.
- In a recent edition of the publication RagTrader the author Fraser wrote the following article:
Quiz. What book written about the Australian fashion industry is now in its 12th reprint? The answer is
A Cut Above The Rest
written jointly by Rose Samuels and Ronnie Hoffman. It is one of four books co-written by Ronnie, who wanted to present simple facts about
how garments are made. They have all been taken up by various Australian TAFE colleges, and sell year after year.
A Cut Above The Rest deals with laying up fabric and turning it into cut pieces
ready for sewing while Tried And Tested
deals with quality control, Fancy Stitching with embroidery and
Hanging By A Thread with sewing threads.
Apart from their academic application, Ronnie's books are simply expressed basic information for anybody involved in garment
manufacture. They've also got quite funny cartoons to lighten the message.

The Authors:
- David Jerram, now a consultant to the apparel industry, spent his early years as a production manager for a
company producing sewing threads. He then went on to set up and operate the TCF quality control division for the Woolworths
group of companies, becoming the country's leading authority on quality management.
Jerram set the pace for many of Australia's manufacturing standards and was the central figure in creating this country's much-admired
legislation controlling the flammability of children's nightwear.
In addition Jerram has served as chairman of the Australian Standards committee on sizing and schoolwear quality.
He chaired the Australian Retailers Association's technical standards committee. He has worked with both State and Federal bodies,
framing legislation on textile standards, product safety, consumer affairs and accident prevention.
- Ronnie Hoffman worked for two decades as a journalist, writer and broadcaster in Britain, Ireland and France.
He developed a special interest in business affairs.
Moving to Australia in the mid nineteen-eighties, Hoffman was appointed editor of Inside Retailing.
After two years he set up his own company and began to publish training packages, books, industry journals and magazines such as
SewTrade, adopted as the official organ of the Clothing and Footwear Institute.
From a background which began in daily newspapers, then moved through to documentary-making and into business magazines and books,
Hoffman has published detailed studies of industry and finance, a marketing textbook, a series of
guidebooks for exporters and a variety of other training modules.
